Thirty-five
years, one son.
It is hard to believe my son is 35 years old. I can still see the kid you were, and at the same time I can look at you now and see the man you became. The years can feel enormous while you are living them, and then suddenly three and a half decades are sitting behind you.
You are my only son, Steven. We did not always have the easiest road. There were years when we disagreed, tested each other and probably drove each other crazy. But underneath all of it, we never lost each other.
Today you are not just my son. You are one of the closest people in my life. We talk about work, ideas, problems, ridiculous things, serious things and everything in between. Somewhere along the way, the kid I was trying to raise became a man I genuinely admire — and one of my best friends.
We started
with the life.
This record began with Steven’s story, not with a generic birthday song. We pulled out the chapters that mattered — Boulder, Denver, Plano, Scottsdale and Chandler; junior golf; his creative work in design, web and video; the harder years; and the father-and-son relationship that eventually became a genuine friendship.
From there, the story was shaped into lyrics, arrangement and a finished production. The last step was the custom 45 cover, designed so the artwork and the music felt like one complete private release.
